We had a fairly quiet short week following on from the public holiday weekend. This was quite a good thing, as next week is going to get very busy – lots to do in the zoo.
What have we done? Made the finishing touches to the coati enclosure – photos to follow. Given the elephant loads of enrichment. Finished our conference presentations. Lots and lots of paperwork – exciting stuff!
We had a couple of days without water – they are repairing the system in the office building at the moment – particularly inconvenient, but preferable now to it breaking down over winter.
This weekend was “interesting “– one of those that is overall quite successful, but with various little annoyances. Steve decided he needed some headphones for when he plays his computer games – saves me from having to listen to the sound of a billion zombies being annihilated, so we took a wander to the computer shop and managed to buy the ones he was looking for. All good. Steve also needs some work boots, so off to a shop where we had seen them a few weeks ago. No luck, they have changed the shop around, and we just couldn’t find them, and not a chance of explaining it to the shop assistant – even with our phrase-book.
We watch a lot of films in the evenings – brought many many DVDs with us, and decided that rather than destroy the speakers in our laptops, we would buy a set of plug in speakers. Off to the computer shop again. We stopped on the way so I could get a manicure (I’m pretending to be good at clothes, hair, makeup and general girl stuff at the moment – trying to fit in a bit here). She did a great job, but I managed to smudge them all when I put my coat on after (not so good at girl things after all!). Off for some food after that at the cafe we usually go to. I decided (stupidly) to try to read the food labels and get some traditional dumplings – I’ve had them before stuffed with potato, cabbage, fruits etc. I managed to pick the meat ones (extra meat for Steve, so not all bad). And, on to the computer shop. We bought a little set of speakers, with left and right little speakers and a sub-woofer that looks like Darth Vader’s head. Tested them all in the shop – all good. We got back home, with plans to watch a film. Steve unpacked the speakers and tested them with music, films and his games. Just as we were about to settle down to watch our film we noticed a dent in one of the little speaker’s cones. Another half an hour walk back to the computer shop, managed to explain that there was a problem, and got the speakers exchanged for an identical set, in silver – it doesn’t look like Darth Vader – it’s more like a little ghost. Anyway, they work just fine and no dents.
None of these things can compete with the frustration of having finished all the marmite. You just can’t get it here. I am thinking of starting a campaign to bring marmite to the people of Ukraine – they just don’t know what they are missing out on!
In other news, we have a lovely baby European Bison, which is fantastic as they are part of an important breeding programme.
